This exceptional dual painting by renowned Dutch artist Ber Mengels captures the Kalvermarkt in The Hague from both day and night perspectives. Executed in 1953, the two companion works and one drawing offer a unique glimpse into the contrasting atmospheres of this historic location.
The first painting, "Kalvermarkt - Corner Korte Houtstraat by Day," is an oil on canvas that depicts the scene in the daylight. Mengels' masterful brushwork brings to life the architectural details of the area.
The second work, "Kalvermarkt - Corner Korte Houtstraat by Night," is an oil on board that showcases the more clandestine nature of the neighborhood after dark. This painting hints at the area's reputation as a hub for "ladies of pleasure" during the evening hours.
The third work is a drawing of the same scene.
