Very nice big impressive painting by Toon Tieland, the famous painter from Amersfoort.

Toon Tieland is one of the most famous painters of the city Amersfoort.

Toon Tieland developed into a beloved painter with his own recognizable signature. As a fourteen-year-old, he visited a Rembrandt exhibition and decided to become an artist. He later took lessons from Dorus Rover in Putten. His subjects consisted mainly of the city of Amersfoort, the country life, religion and Belgium (Brugge and Flanders)..

Probably due to the exceedingly brittle nature of the unfired clay he used, this is one of only a handful of Lambertus Zijl’s models to have survived. With his subdued, abstracted shapes Zijl was a key proponent of the new Netherlandish modernist movement at the turn of the twentieth century. The present statuette offers a rare glimpse of Zijl’s hands at work, quickly and effectively reducing the monumentality of one of the most famous medieval works of art from Utrecht Cathedral, the stone statue of Saint Pontianus of Spoleto now in the Centraal Museum in the same city, to the play of lines and plains so recognisably part of the School of Amsterdam.
