Jits Bakker

Renkum 1937 - Wageningen 2014

Jits Bakker was born just before the Second World War on 6 July 1937 in Renkum. His youth was marked by the Second World War, in which his father was executed as a resistance fighter in Camp Vught. The airborne landings near Arnhem, which he witnessed as a child, left a deep impression.

After training at the trade school and a short period at the graphic school, he worked as a designer at De Grontmij. But ultimately Jits Bakker worked for about fifty years as a versatile artist. He is best known as a sculptor, but he also painted and was active as a glass artist and graphic artist. He also designed jewellery, medals and small sculptures. Jits Bakker worked a lot with bronze, but also with marble, for example.

His work is expressive, colourful, often dynamic and emotionally charged, and his style moved from impressionism to fauvism. Subjects that play a prominent role in Jits Bakker's work are sports, dance and youth.

His work can be found a lot in public spaces, unfortunately he is also the most robbed sculptor in the Netherlands. Well-known works by Jits Bakker are Olympiad Dancers, Tour cyclists and Europe and the Bull. His exhibitions were not only held in the Netherlands, but he also gained international fame with his art, including in Spain, France and the US.

Jits Bakker passed away on 5 June 2014. His work lives on in many museums, both in the Netherlands and internationally.
