Life and work - Nicolaas Wijnberg

Nicolaas Wijnberg was an artist and choreographer. He was a lithographer, like his father, but also made paintings, posters, decors, drawings, illustrations and book cover designs. He also did sculpture. Wijnberg was one of the co-founders of "De Realisten" (1945), a group of Amsterdam painters who formed the counter-movement of Cobra. Wijnberg mainly made figure representations and portraits, still lifes, landscapes and cityscapes. From 1958 he was editor of visual arts for the literary magazine Tirade and from 1965 to 1970 he had his own art dealership. He was professor of scenography at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht.
