Jan van Heel
Rotterdam 1898- The Hague 1990
Jan van Heel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. He worked in Rotterdam, Paris (1946-1947) and The Hague. Jan van Heel's work is considered to be part of "The New Hague School". Jan van Heel is one of the most important representatives of post-war realism. He painted modestly and figuratively. The themes with which Van Heel became known were the clown and, after a first visit to Spain, especially the Spanish earth, which showed itself to be unpolished and untouched. Other colours made their appearance in his work: "saturated brown, glowing red, burning ochres, muted green".
After his stay in Paris in 1946/1947, from the fifties onwards you saw subjects such as old toys, an old classroom, or for example his pity for a dead bird. These subjects have become an indispensable part of his oeuvre. Jan van Heel was a member of Pulchri Studio and in 1928 one of the founders of the Werkers with Rein Drayer, Albert Termote and Piet Bulthuis among others. In 1936 he was co-founder of the artists' group "De Groep". In 1951 he founded the group Verve with artists from The Hague (including Herman Berserik, Co Westerik, Willem Hussem and Jaap Nanninga) and in 1960 the group Fugare.
Jan van Heel's work has been exhibited dozens of times, also abroad. In addition, van Heel has remained popular with private individuals.
