Joop Kropff was a Dutch painter who left his mark on 20th century modern art. Kropff was partly self-taught but studied drawing at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He was part of the New Hague School and was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.
In his early work, Kropff still opted for figurative representations, such as cityscapes, still lifes, landscapes, and nudes, but after the 1950s his attention shifted to more abstract forms and expression.
During his career, Kropff joined artists' associations such as De Haaagse Kunstkring, the Posthoorngroep and Fugare. Through these networks he exhibited his work and actively participated in the art movements of his time.
