Jan Roeland
IJsselmuiden 1935 - Amsterdam 2016
Jan Roeland was a Dutch painter. He trained as a teacher and was self-taught. His work was characterized by a quiet simplicity and a keen eye for form.
Although his oeuvre can be read as playful and accessible at first glance, there is a deep systematics and reflection behind his compositions. Roeland moves on the interface between figuration and abstraction, in which everyday subjects such as birds, cups, knives or ladders are reduced to their most essential contours.
Jan Roeland taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede and at the Rijksacademie in his hometown of Amsterdam, where he had lived since 1959.
His work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Rijksmuseum Twente in Enschede, the Dordrechts Museum in Dordrecht and the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in Schiedam Schiedam and in the collections of private individuals and companies.
