About this artwork
A unique set of three works by The Hague painter Ber Mengels that together tell a fascinating story. The set consists of two paintings and one drawing capturing the same location at different times of day: the Kalvermarkt at the corner of Korte Houtstraat in The Hague, both during the day and at night.
The first painting, "Kalvermarkt - Corner Korte Houtstraat by Day," is an oil on canvas that depicts the scene in the daylight. The second work, "Kalvermarkt - Corner Korte Houtstraat by Night," is an oil on board that showcases the more clandestine nature of the neighborhood after dark. This painting hints at the area's reputation as a hub for "ladies of pleasure" during the evening hours. The third work is a drawing of the same scene. The set is in good condition. Provenance: Kunsthandel Knoester, exhibited at Pulchri Studio, 16 March to 14 April 1996. Literature: Mentioned in the book "The New Hague School" by Ton Knoester and Roelie Knoester-Penninkhof.
About Ber Mengels
Ber Mengels (1921-1995) was a Dutch painter who lived and worked in The Hague throughout his life. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and developed a recognizable style in which realism and impressionism come together. Mengels' paintings from the 1950s often depict everyday urban scenes—think blank walls, dead-end streets, and fences—sometimes wrapped in a quiet, almost desolate atmosphere. He is considered a member of the "New Hague School."
