Life and work - Piet Gutter

Piet Gutter (born 1944) is a Dutch painter who has long been devoted to a realistic style of painting. His work consists primarily of hyperrealistic still lifes in trompe-l'œil style, executed in oil on canvas or on panel. The subjects of his paintings are everyday objects, including old toys, books, glassware, and other utilitarian items, often showing signs of wear or age.

A defining aspect of Gutter’s work is his careful approach to composition. Colour, light, background, and contrast are thoughtfully balanced to give the objects a strong sense of presence. His paintings are frequently associated with a trompe-l’œil approach, in which the objects are rendered with such precision that they appear almost lifelike, often evoking a sense of nostalgia.

Piet Gutter studied under Henk Helmantel, whose influence can be seen in Gutter’s classical and meticulous treatment of the still life. His works are included in museum and corporate collections, as well as in private collections in the Netherlands and abroad.
