About the artist - Peter van Poppel
Peter van Poppel belongs to the post-war generation of New Realists who emerged in the 1970s. He worked independently and was not affiliated with any particular movement or artists’ group. His development was autonomous: through an intensive study of masterworks from various periods in art history, he gradually formed a distinctive and recognizable visual language.
Van Poppel studied at the School for Graphic Arts in Utrecht. He lived in this city throughout his life and passed away there in 2023. Utrecht, with its surrealist tradition, had a noticeable influence on his work.
Style and Themes
His paintings are characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a subtle combination of humor and tenderness. Within a form of naïve realism, he introduced slight distortions in shape and composition. Many works depict people from his immediate surroundings or portray small, seemingly simple moments.
A recurring element is the childlike quality within the human figure. His characters often convey a sense of innocence, as if referring to a comforting, almost paradisiacal perception of the world. At first glance, the scenes may appear ordinary, yet upon closer inspection they transcend everyday reality.
Van Poppel frequently worked on a small scale, using techniques such as tempera and gouache. His precise approach and refined execution give the scenes a concentrated, almost contemplative atmosphere.
Influences
Although his oeuvre appears contemporary, influences from earlier centuries are clearly present. He drew inspiration from artists across different periods in art history and occasionally incorporated subtle references to existing works of art.
Religious themes, such as Annunciation, as well as subjects referring to medieval and Renaissance portrait traditions, reappear in his work. He reinterpreted these classical motifs in a personal manner, preserving their essence within his own visual language. According to the artist, Belgian Expressionists were also an important source of inspiration.
