About this sculpture

This characteristic woman's head by Jules Vermeire is carved from black marble and demonstrates sculptural artistry for which the Belgian artist is renowned. Standing 56 cm tall (excluding the original base), this is an imposing work. The black marble gives the sculpture a powerful and monumental presence. Female heads and masks are prominent themes in Vermeire's work, and this sculpture is a beautiful example of his sculptural art. Provenance: Kunsthandel Knoester.

About Jules Vermeire

Jules Seraphien Vermeire (1885-1977) was a Belgian sculptor and draftsman, best known for his female heads, masks, and charcoal drawings. Vermeire learned stone carving in his father's workshop and studied at the academies of Ghent and Antwerp. When the First World War broke out, he fled with his brothers to the Netherlands, where he lived for the rest of his life in The Hague and Wassenaar. Vermeire initially worked extensively with wood and horn, and later also with bronze, marble, and stone. His work is represented in the Kröller-Müller Museum, Gemeentemuseum The Hague, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.
