Unfired clay (unica), the saint shown as a knight, mounted on a polychromed wooden base.
Probably due to the exceedingly brittle nature of the unfired clay he used, this is one of only a handful of Lambertus Zijl’s models to have survived. With his subdued, abstracted shapes Zijl was a key proponent of the new Netherlandish modernist movement at the turn of the twentieth century. The present statuette offers a rare glimpse of Zijl’s hands at work, quickly and effectively reducing the monumentality of one of the most famous medieval works of art from Utrecht Cathedral, the stone statue of Saint Pontianus of Spoleto now in the Centraal Museum in the same city, to the play of lines and plains so recognisably part of the School of Amsterdam. Adding to the intimacy of the statuette is the fact that it was made for Willem Vogelsang, one of the two first art history professors in the Netherlands, who would go on to become the rector magnificus of Utrecht University as well as the director of the Stedelijk Museum in Utrecht. It is in the latter capacity that it is likely that he met Lambertus Zijl, an occasion commemorated by Zijl’s gift of this fine interpretation of one of the museum’s masterpieces to Professor Vogelensang.
Although his sculptural language does not always reveal it, Zijl demonstrated a fascination for medieval sculpture both during his training and with the present sketch.5 Professionally, Zijl interacted with early sculpture on several occasions. For instance, he provided sculpture in the medieval style as part of Pierre Cuypers’ restoration the Choertoren of the city hall in Middelburg.
