Cornelis Kloos

Rotterdam 1895-1976 The Hague

Cornelis Kloos was a sculptor, painter, draftsman and watercolourist. Cornelis was born in Rotterdam in 1895. After the war, Cloos went to the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague.

He started his career as a drawing teacher. But after 1925 he chose art completely. He became a member of Pulchri Studio and the Hague Art Circle. Cloos is best known for his portraits of young women - very young girls, often depicted naked. Often painted thickly and in detail.

Kloos is not bothered by the fact that some critics call this type of painting erotic. In his view, beauty and eroticism go very well together. His painting is always figurative. He was averse to abstraction. His painting style is in line with the new objectivity of the twenties and thirties of the previous century.
