About this artwork

This 1968 oil painting captures a moment of urban transformation in The Hague. Kamerlingh Onnes documented the demolition of the Nieuwe Haven, a historic 18th-century canal district that was cleared in the early 1970s to make way for government ministry buildings and the Prins Bernhardviaduct. The work reflects the artist's lifelong interest in everyday reality, here recording a controversial chapter in The Hague's urban renewal.

Painted just before the major demolition phase of 1970-1971, this piece serves as both artistic documentation and social commentary on the loss of historic architecture. The painting is signed with initials 'HHKO' and annotated on the reverse with the location and date. Framed and in excellent condition.

About Harm Kamerlingh Onnes

Harm Kamerlingh Onnes (1893–1985) was a versatile Dutch artist who worked in drawing, watercolour, gouache, oil painting and ceramics. He is best known for small paintings and works on paper depicting everyday life, almost always with humour. From 1925 onwards, everyday reality became his subject, and his work remained exclusively figurative throughout his career.

Despite his artistic accomplishments, Kamerlingh Onnes described his work modestly as "to mess around with," rejecting theoretical foundations in favour of direct observation and gentle humour.
