About this painting
This gouache depicts a clown, one of the recurring themes that became an indispensable part of Jan van Heel's oeuvre. Created in 1977, the work reflects Van Heel's enduring fascination with subjects that evoke melancholy and quiet contemplation — the clown, old toys, and forgotten objects that carry emotional weight beyond their surface appearance.
The clown motif emerged in Van Heel's work after his stay in Paris in the late 1940s and became a signature subject alongside his Spanish landscapes and still lifes of old toys. Signed and dated 1977. The work is framed behind glass.
