Pieter de Haard
Rotterdam 1914-2000
Pieter de Haard was a Pastel artist, painter, draughtsman, lithographer and illustrator.
At first he painted mainly figuratively, but from the 1930s he started experimenting with abstract work. Pieter de Haard is best known for his geometric abstract work that he created from the 1940s. In the 1940s Pieter de Haard lived in Paris. During this period his work was based on musical rhythms, which he translated into visual art.
However, his great interest was in space and infinity, which is visible in his figurative and expressive works. Already during the Second World War he made his first geometric abstract works: geometric figures, based on age-old measurement systems with the golden ratio as his favourite.
Here a line is divided in two in such a way that the shortest part is equal to twice the longest part. The resulting proportions always appear harmonious.
De Haard's work looks cosmic and is often exciting in its colour combinations.
