Mattheus ‘Theo’ Germann was born in Amsterdam on 29 April 1926. From 1950 to 1957 he studied drawing and painting at Academie Artibus in Utrecht. He initially worked as a photographer and taught photography at the same academy from 1957 to 1963. During the 1980s his attention increasingly shifted towards sculpture.
The human figure is central to Germann’s sculpture, often in the form of the female nude. He worked mainly in bronze and stone. His sculptures are characterised by rounded, simplified forms and flowing lines, while the human anatomy generally remains recognisable. Alongside figurative work, he also created more abstract and experimental sculptures.
Works by Theo Germann are held in the collection of Beeldengalerij Het Depot in Wageningen. The collection includes, among others, the bronze sculptures Anja (1990), Rita II (1995) and Rachel op tenen (1987). Germann also received recognition for his earlier work as a photographer, including the title European Master of Photography from Europhot in 1978.
