About Peter van Poppel

Peter van Poppel (1945–2023) was a Dutch painter from Utrecht who belonged to the post-war generation of New Realists that emerged in the 1970s. He studied at the School for Graphic Arts in Utrecht and developed an autonomous style characterized by naïve realism with slight distortions in shape and composition. His work combines meticulous detail with humor and tenderness, often depicting people from his immediate surroundings with a focus on innocence and the childlike quality within the human figure. Van Poppel was inspired by Belgian Expressionists and classical motifs from medieval and Renaissance traditions. His work is held in the collections of Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum Catharijneconvent, Drents Museum Assen, ING Bank, and the Municipality of Utrecht.
