About this bronze sculpture
This bronze sculpture of a woman was created by Peter van der Meer around 1965 and marked with PvdM. The work displays Van der Meer's characteristic style, in which he formed his female figures with thick clay plaques, resulting in expressive and organic forms. Van der Meer was also called 'a sculpture kneader' because of his method of working with thick clay plaques. His sculptures often have a humorous side and are recognizable by their acrobatically moving forms and expressive appearance.
About Peter van der Meer
Peter van der Meer (1939-1999) was a Dutch sculptor and industrial designer from The Hague. He studied sculpture with Dirk Bus and Henri van Haaren at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague until 1963, and studied marble processing at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara in Italy. Van der Meer formed his female figures and animal figures with thick clay plaques, earning him the nickname 'sculpture kneader'. His acrobatically moving children are also typical of his work. Due to his popular style, Van der Meer had many exhibitions and commissions at a young age, including sculptures for public spaces in The Hague such as 'Kangaroo chair', 'Girl on a skippy ball', and 'Girl with bicycle'.
